It was the summer of 2007 when I first fell in love with Marramiero’s Montepulciano d’Abruzzo. It is the one wine responsible for the existence of my agency. My wife and I were having a great dinner in Pescara with some friends when the bottle somehow found its way to our table. I never experienced such a powerful yet elegant wine, it was incredible and I was determined to import back to Canada for personal consumption, I even registered an agency so I would be able. That was 10 years ago, it remains one of my favourite and most important wineries in my portfolio.
DaMa which stands for Dante Marramiero was named this simply because it was the daily table wine of Dante Marramiero. Deep red striking notes of colour with a nose highlighted by black cherry, currants, vanilla and licorice. Plenty of rich body with fruit, earth and substantial structure and tannin. A dry mellow taste and harmonious structure makes this bottle of incredible value. Maybe the best valued wine in our entire portfolio. Aged 12 months in 2/3/4 passaged barrels, all 4 french forests and slovanian oak.
Named after Dante Marramiero’s favourite book Dantes Inferno the name Inferi was given to this wine as the name Inferno is already a protected name for wine from Valtellina. Presenting itself in one of the most beautiful bottles I have ever seen this is a very modern new world take on Montepulciano. Substantial red friuit presence and nuances of cedar, vanilla, chocolate and tobacco. On the palate its is ample and smooth with great power and elegance. A wine with a great ability to age for upward of 20 years, one of my all time favourite wines, every vintage!
After a very careful selection of vines and adequate ripening of the grapes on the plant, once harvested the “anima” which translates to “soul” arises. Bright straw yellow, its scent is persistent, fruity and intense and the taste is fruity, balanced, harmonious with references to the ripe fruit. An excellent accompaniment to delicate pastas, fish and appetizers.
